Inclement Weather and Seasons Change Create Home Health Care Challenges
While tornados and earthquakes have ravaged sections of the United States, one story that has not received a tremendous amount of coverage is the struggles of home health care and hospice patients. In Alabama, Alacare Home Health and Hospice has been proactively reaching out to the community trying to find patients displaced by recent tornadoes so they can continue to provide critical services. While many families have been hit hard, the special needs of Hospice patients have made for some exceptionally difficult circumstances, particularly given the crippled infrastructure many of these service organizations have been dealing with .
One of the unseen heroes in many disasters in the United States the past few years has been home health care services . The most recent tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri left multiple home health care agencies completely destroyed. Amazingly, Access Home Health managed to become operational in a matter of days despite having their headquarters destroyed.
This past winter led to similar conditions in the Midwest, where severe snow storms left some patients cut off from not only home health care, but many other vital services. Seasons Change Home Health Care, located in Pigeon, Michigan had staff members doing everything from delivering food to shoveling driveways in addition to their typical services during the inclement weather .
In these hazardous conditions the clients aren’t the only ones facing difficulties. In many cases the care givers and the owners must also take steps to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the caregiving process. “Over the holidays, one of Our Home Health Aids had a fire in their home and I collected food and clothing for the family from employees and friends. They have a three year old son and were staying in a hotel temporarily. We make it our duty to care for our own as well,” said Diana Hennrick, Business Development Manager at Seasons Change Home Health Care.
So while the nation continues to reassemble communities ravaged by the weather of the past year, keep in mind that home health care service providers are doing their part to keep the handicapped and homebound healthy and safe.
