Home Improvement - Time for Summer Remodeling

Posted on the June 14th, 2011 under Others by stevekay819

Spring is a great time of the year for doing home repairs because of the mild temperatures, but summer has the added benefit of longer days and generally less rain. These times of the year people naturally want to be up and about getting stuff done. There’s a good deal of motivation in a beautiful day to start those projects that have been nagging at you.

If you’re shy on ideas for home improvement, here are some of the best tips to setup and plan some basic remodeling and improvement projects - both large and small - to get you through the warm weather in preparation for winter.

Patios, Decks and Any Other Wood Structure Outside - An outdoor living space is just about the most popular and least invasive remodeling projects a person can do. Most people already have some kind of patio or at least a patch of ground they set some lawn chairs up on. The backyard is one of America’s most popular hangouts. A semi shady patch of dirt and some aluminum lawn chairs next to the grill isn’t exactly awe inspiring though and some homeowners would love to have something a bit more comfortable. Your outdoor living space can be significantly improved with the addition of a wood deck or custom patio.

A spacious wooden deck is not only comfortable but it gives you and your family safe place to gather that is easy to clean and maintain. Likewise, a custom deck gives you room for gardening, building an outdoor kitchen and BBQ area or for installing a hot tub. If wood isn’t your cup of tea then ditch the concrete slab and install stone pavers - you can still have the same outdoor living space whether it’s stone or wood beneath your feet.

Home Maintenance - It can be a bit of a chore and a bore having to do home repairs but it is a necessity. Even though it may not be as much fun as planning and installing a new outdoor area it is still a perfect time to take care of the little things that can turn into monstrous nightmares if left unattended. As the old saying goes “A stitch in time saves 9.” I don’t know many people that, actually thinking about it, would want to do nine times the work at a far greater expense just because they felt like ignoring it a bit longer.

Take the time to go through your home inside and out with a thorough walkthrough. Note things that are out of place as you tick off items on your checklist. From you list, establish priority items. Some of the important places to check include the basement (waterproofing, wall cracks), re-caulking and weather stripping around the home, cleaning and resealing your deck, trimming landscaping, cleaning gutters, mending fences, sealing the driveway, replacing windows, etc.

Green Renovation - It may sound a bit odd, but in the grain of Benjamin Franklin and his famous quote “A penny saved is a penny earned.” Renovating areas of your home that cost you money on your energy bills will work towards paying you back for the renovation in savings and once that is out of the way your savings are basically earnings.

Some of the most common energy-efficient improvements include new insulation materials such as foil insulation in the attic, window replacement with more efficient windows, solar panels, wind energy systems, fuel cells, etc.

Take any one of these projects and you’re guaranteed to build up a list that will keep you busy in the coming weeks. If you’ve got a lot to do in terms of home improvement, don’t let it overwhelm you. Do the things you want to tackle personally and hire a contractor to do other more difficult home improvement jobs like the window replacement.
