Twitter may have been intended as a social networking platform for people to easily disseminate their likes and dislikes as well as other random thoughts or commentaries they want to share, it turns out though, that it is also a great platform for developing business leads. A good many corporations as well as non profits like NPR (National Public Radio) Have a presence in the social media world. These presences on Facebook , Twitter and a few other major media sites help them leverage social media rather nicely. Most small businesses are rather behind the curve in this respect. If you aren’t using twitter for more than declaring your love of espresso, you are missing out on a powerful resource.

1. Actively Build - If you want to make connections with people then you need to add them. In the world of Twitter that means talking about them, talking to them, @mentioning them, or retweeting what they post. You have to engage the people you want to connect with, they don’t just flock to you because you have a cool @name. You will also want to avoid wasting your time by selecting people that actually have some interest in your industry.

2. Tweet Regularly - There’s a reason when a radio station stops broadcasting that it’s called “dead air”. That’s because silence means there’s nothing to listen to, and “listeners” or in the case of Twitter, “followers” will go elsewhere. Saying nothing means your feed is essentially dead.

3. Tweet Content of Value - If you want to network on twitter and attract business leads then you need to offer something of value. Sometimes just sharing information can be more valuable than discounts. There are always people crawling the web looking for solutions for their own businesses and private affairs. Offer solutions with leading edge ideas and watch the contacts gradually build up.

4. Talk about Trending Topics - What do people love more than finding the solution to a problem? Hearing about other interesting and relevant stuff. Just because you’re involved in the shoe business doesn’t mean everything you talk about has to do with shoes. That’s boring. Show followers you have personality and share interesting things that you believe bring value. People will generally appreciate your willingness to avoid spammy shilling and instead promote value.

5. Improve your Tweets - It isn’t easy to fit a lot into 140 characters. If you don’t learn how you will either not get retweeted or the retweets will be chopped or not credited to you.

6. Cross Promote - You are going to want to let people know you are on Twitter. Anywhere you would put your name put your twitter along with it. Then offer promotions or other perks to those that follow your feed. This is another way to gradually build up your followers.

7. Build Trust - You can easily ruin trust by trying to sell constantly to your followers. Avoid spam, shilling and other tweets that might lose the apparent value of following you. Instead try to build trust with quality content, a variety of content and offers that will quickly convert your normal network into strong business leads.
