Cigars Help Impress Friends & Clients

One of my favorite television dramas in recent history was Boston Legal. Starring William Shatner and James Spader, the show followed the lives and exploits of the attorneys at one of Boston’s most prestigious and outrageous law firms. It was hilarious, engaging, intriguing, and all around a well written show. Despite whatever zany situation Denny Crane (Shatner) and his accomplice Alan Shore (Spader) found themselves in each week they always concluded each episode by congregating on the balcony of their penthouse office to share a cigar and a glass of scotch and soak in the beauty of the city.

I always envied the characters Crane and Shore for this very reason. How cool is it that at the conclusion of each work day they take a moment to share a couple of Rocky Patel cigars and enjoy the company of a friend and colleague. There is something about the distinct flavor and silky touch of a quality cigar that makes socializing with friends and clients that much more enjoyable.

The fact that enjoying a fine cigar is like membership into an exclusive club doesn’t hurt either. Cigars are best shared with others. To enjoy, analyze, discuss and enjoy some more. An expensive cigar can help make sale or mend a fence. It shows appreciation to a colleague for a job well done, or thanks to a vendor for taking care of that rush order. Cigars are almost universally appreciated.

One such personal experience I had was with a friends brother who owned a successful company and was looking to expand his practice. His brother and I had been friends for a considerable amount of time, and when he mentioned to his brother he was considering expanding his brother recommended he speak with me. My experience in the fields of sales management and marketing made me an ideal candidate to head up his sales force.

We all met for drinks at a high end bar and what started as a short meeting over cocktails turned into a night of drinks and conversation. At one point we decided to leave the current watering hole in favor of a new hot spot that recently opened across town. As I pulled into the parking lot I noticed the nightclub was across the way from a small cigar shop. I quickly ducked in to examine the selection.

I intended on quickly picking up a couple of Churchills for my collection and rejoining my party across the street. I picked out a couple of cigars and headed to the register. The proprietor stopped me and asked if I had ever tried an Acid cigar before. He informed me that they were a relative newcomer to the cigar world and made a robust aromatic cigar that I was sure to enjoy. Acid cigars debuted in 1999 and quickly gained notoriety among even the most refined cigar aficionados. The idea behind Acid cigars was a theory of being bold and forging new paths while still adhering to the traits and qualities that cigar connoisseurs demand. Anxious to try one, I picked up a few and returned to my waiting party.

As a I sat down the business owner friend of mine asked where I had gotten the cigars. He was not a cigar connoisseur himself, but had always enjoyed the thought of being an aficionado. We decided right then ard there was the perfect time and place to smoke the new Acid cigars.

The cigars were such a hit that not only did he offer me the job, but he demanded I start joining in his weekly poker game composed of a variety of other young wealthy business owners from town. The networking opportunities were unbelievable. Although I declined the position, the cigar experience forged a new friendship between us and led to a lucrative business relationship in the future. I’m confident to say I owe it largely to the cigars I introduced that night.
